His work started to be used more widely, and he was involved with the design of a proton linear accelerator at AERE, Harwell which was the prototype for the Linacinjector for the PS accelerator at CERN.

During his time at Harwell he led research into new accelerators which led to the installation in 1957 of the 50 MeV proton linear accelerator and the 8 GeV Nimrod Proton synchrotron at the new Rutherford Laboratory at Harwell, where Pickavance was appointed the first Director.

Mozley, who was born in Boston and graduated from Harvard University in 1938, worked on radar technology at Sperry Gyroscope Co . in World War II . He received a doctorate at the University of California at Berkeley in 1950 and took part in the construction of the world's first proton linear accelerator.
